EEG Einspeisevergütung (Feed-in Tariff)
Approximately €0.082 per kWh for systems up to 10 kW, paid for all electricity fed into the grid. The tariff is guaranteed for 20 years from the date of grid connection.
The Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz (EEG) feed-in tariff guarantees a fixed price for all solar electricity fed into the national grid for 20 years from commissioning. For 2026, the tariff is approximately €0.082/kWh for systems ≤10 kW and €0.071/kWh for the 10–40 kW portion. Rates are revised quarterly by the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency) — confirm current rates before installation. The tariff is degressive, meaning new systems registered in later quarters receive slightly lower rates than earlier registrations. For systems >100 kW, a tendering process applies instead of a fixed tariff. Operators must register with the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR). With Germany's €0.31/kWh electricity price, self-consumption of solar power provides a higher financial return than grid export.
KfW 270 Renewable Energies — Standard Loan
Low-interest financing up to €150,000 per project for photovoltaic systems. Interest rates are significantly below market rates, set by KfW and subject to regular revision.
The KfW 270 program (Erneuerbare Energien – Standard) provides long-term, low-interest loans for the construction or expansion of renewable energy plants including rooftop solar PV. Loan amounts from €1,000 to €150,000 per project are available with terms up to 30 years. Repayment-free periods of up to 3 years are available. Applications must be made through an on-lending bank (Hausbank) before construction begins — KfW does not lend directly to end customers. Battery storage systems connected to the solar installation are eligible. The program is open to private individuals, freelancers, SMEs, and large enterprises. Current interest rates are published on KfW's website; they vary based on the repayment term and energy efficiency of the installation.
Solarstrom-Steuerbefreiung (Solar Self-Consumption Tax Exemption)
Full income tax exemption on revenue from solar systems ≤30 kW (peak) installed on residential or mixed-use buildings. Applies to both electricity sold to the grid and self-consumed power. No income limit or cap.
Since January 1, 2023, income generated from solar photovoltaic systems up to 30 kW (peak) on single-family homes, mixed-use buildings, and apartment buildings is fully exempt from German income tax (Einkommensteuer) and trade tax (Gewerbesteuer). This includes both feed-in revenue and the imputed value of self-consumed electricity. Operators of systems ≤30 kW no longer need to file a profit/loss statement for their solar system with their income tax return. The exemption was introduced by the Jahressteuergesetz 2022 (§ 3 Nr. 72 EStG). Systems between 30–100 kW are subject to a simplified profit calculation. This change significantly reduced administrative burden for small solar system operators in Germany.
Umsatzsteuer-Nullsatz (0% VAT on Solar Equipment)
0% VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) applies to the supply and installation of solar PV modules, inverters, battery storage systems, and related components for residential and similar buildings. Standard German VAT is 19%.
Since January 1, 2023, the supply and installation of solar PV systems on or near private dwellings and buildings used for activities in the public interest (e.g., schools, municipal buildings) is subject to a 0% VAT rate (§ 12 Abs. 3 UStG). This applies to solar modules, inverters, essential mounting equipment, battery storage systems, and the installation labor. The zero rate applies when the installed system capacity does not exceed 30 kW (peak) or when the building is primarily used for residential purposes. On a €15,000 system, this saves approximately €2,850 compared to the standard 19% VAT rate. Installers must ensure their invoices correctly apply the zero rate — both the equipment and labor portions are covered.
